HomeGoods Pick of the Week

Last night I visited HomeGoods.  After rush hours, is a good time to shop the store.  There are  less drivers on the road and less crowds in the store.  It is easy to get distracted by all the merchandise.  If you are a savvy shopper,  decorating your entire home on a small budget is possible.  I recommend you have a decorating plan and stick to it.  Buy what you love.

.

This week at HomeGoods, I like the bust display.   The bust is neoclassical sophistication.  It is a piece that is both timeless and chic.  They look great in any room of the house.  After seeing these pictures, I think their grouping  just got smaller.  Add a bust and a little old world sensibility to your home, as a focal point in the dining room.

The bust adds elegance to the vanity table.  It balances the hardwood with a feminine touch.  I like this idea of using it to hold and display my pearls.

Floor Patterns

While visiting Miami Beach,  I came across these Spanish style floors in one of the retail stores.  I like the pattern, but prefer something more modern and classic.

The floor options are endless:  painted floors, tile, wood, stone, bamboo, etc.  Here are few of  my favorite.  Enjoy.

Decorative painter Bob Christian painted the wood floor with a large-scale geometric pattern.

Organizing and Thrifting

It’s the middle of the week.  A reminder to gather my thoughts and my home.  Wednesday is a good day to straighten up, review my schedule, and adjust my weekly goals.   One of my goals is to stay organized.

I’m starting to organize my personal items.  Taking a little more time to keep things in order now, will save time later.   I went thrifting and found a few pretty Wedgwood pieces for my accessories.  A covered box-pale blue Jasperwarea lidded trinket box, and a fluted dish. My finds were under $50.  I think I made out pretty good.  It’s important that a space be functional and beautiful.   Get creative.  Look for unconventional storage and display pieces.  A pretty teacup could hold your rings, a saucer could hold your necklace.  Here are a few designer boxes for inspiration.

Wow!  They are beautiful.  Don’t forget, now is a perfect time to stop by Goodwill  and drop off  winter clothing.  You know those items that have been in the back of the closet for more than six months.  Happy Wednesday!

DesignTrend 2012

One of my finishing touch, in my designs, is adding a “living” plant or tree in the home.  Plants are inexpenisve and provide sculptural elements and texture.  Ficus trees and high def paintings are just two of the design trends for 2012 in Canadian House and Home.  For a modern look, the fiddleleaf fig (or Ficus lyrata)  in a large seagrass basket makes a casual accent.   The placement of the tree should be in a corner of the living room or dining room.  Make sure it’s well potted and nurtured.   If you have small children or small pets, a large fern placed out of reach is a better choice.

Spindle Chair

Over 15 years ago, I purchased a spindle chair at auction.  I took it home and reupholstered it in a blue and white Waverly fabric.  I loved it, but my husband didn’t.  He wanted a  leather recliner.  A few years later, my darling husband asked that I sell it and get something more modern.  At the time, we were living in a charming guest, stone cottage at the Abbott and Guggenheim Estate in Warwick, NY.  Was he kidding me….  It just didn’t fit with the decor.  I sold my chair, but I couldn’t bring myself to buy a recliner.  I told him we are too young to purchase a recliner.   Instead, I bought a wing chair and a footrest.  Today, I still think about my spindle chair.  It had brass wheels on the feet, horse hair in the upholstery seats and worn arms.  The previous owner must have enjoyed it.   I would like to find another spindle chair.   It’s hard to replace an antique with a new piece of furniture.  The classic spindle chair is back with a contemporary twist.

I’ll keep looking, I’m sure there is one waiting for me.

HomeGoods Pick of the Week

The holidays are over, but many special moments have been captured with pictures. I counted eight cameras in one night.  If you have gone crazy taking pictures, take a trip to your local HomeGoods store to find beautiful storage boxes to organize your pictures.  They also have great picture frames for displaying your favorite.  Now is a good time to update or add a few more pictures to your wall.   Displaying photos on end tables, bookshelves, nightstands or kitchen counters will keep family and friends close to your heart throughout the year.  I like silver picture frames.  I found a pair of  classic bamboo silver plated picture frames for under $10 each.   Position your pictures at different heights for added interest, place a few books under a frame or two.

add them to an end table,

a few pictures on your desk,

a feature wall,

yes,  a bathroom of your favorite images….

Have fun!

Bright, Yellow Kitchen

Happy New Year!    We are off to a bright start.   The January cover of  Martha Stewart Living and the  February cover of  House Beautiful, both  feature yellow kitchens.   In House Beautiful,  Designer Lindsey Coral Harper use of  “shocking” yellow walls in the kitchen reminds me of summer days.   I love yellow in the kitchen — it’s like being greeted with a bright, cheerful smile, when I walk in to start breakfast.

On a dreary winter day,  walking  into a room with a little yellow is like a burst of sunshine.  It reminds me that warm, sunny days are ahead.   If you’re nervous about incorporating yellow in your home, start really small — add a  bouquet of yellow roses, paint a mirror,  add a pillow or give an old dresser new life.

HomeGoods Pick of the Week

I found a small globe at HomeGoods to add to my globe collection.   Accessories are my thing.  A room is not complete without them.  Accessories make the room personal.    As my personal taste changes, so do my accessories.    However, my major pieces stay the same.  That’s why I am always looking for pieces that catch my eye at thrift shops and garage sales.   My small globe will have company.  It will be added to a few vintage globes I found on a recent trip to Pennsylvania.  I’m displaying them on a bookshelf  in my son’s room for now.  They would look great on top of an armoire, or on a table.   I’ll need to find one more to make a grouping of  five.

Collections of old globes or maps bring classic design and a sense of history to a space. Think about incorporating globes and maps into your home or office.   I worked in the office with Attorney Stanley Futterman, the father of  Dan Futterman (Dan was  in the movie The Bird Cage with Robin Williams.  Dan played the son).   The reception area had a great wall featuring a world atlas from top to bottom–the map was customized to fit the wall perfectly.   It instantly added charm and was the topic of many conversations.   Think outside the box.  You could easily use maps to cover a serving tray, the back of a bookshelf, the top or front of a dresser.    Here are some examples of rooms decorated with globes.

One Mirror, Two Looks

I hope you had a wonderful holiday with family and friends.  On a trip to Pottery Barn Kids last week,  I saw a charming mirror on display.   I was thinking the mirror would look great in a living room, as well.

So, when I saw a similar mirror in the 2011 Princess Margaret Showhome, I wasn’t surprise.   A mirror with good lines looks great anywhere.

Two large scale mirrors were used in the great room.  The room is gorgeous.

The great room  is part of the Lynda Reeves and the Canadian House & Home design team.   The  Moorish-style mirrors bring elegance to both rooms.  Enjoy a tour of the 6,500-square-foot dream home.
