Mark D. Sikes’ California Home

Designer and Lifestyle Blogger, Mark D. Sikes beautiful California  home was first featured in House Beautiful Magazine.  He  launched his Lifestyle Blog in 2011 showing us his sense of style. Sikes has captured our attention ever since. Two decades of working as a visual merchandiser and store designer for fashion retailers prepared him well. Sikes’ interior design firm opened in 2012.

In just a few years, Sikes has been able to do what most designers dream.  He has landed the cover of two major magazines.  Sikes’ new redesigned home is featured in the July/August 2014 issue of Veranda Magazine.

Sikes prefers to entertain guest in the living.  Windows and French doors are opened to take advantage of the fresh  California air and sun.  Every room opens to the garden, designed by Sikes.  In the garden, boxwoods are planted in terracotta pots that line up the steps of the various levels of the garden.  I love boxwoods in the garden.  I consider them the gatekeepers of the garden.

House Dreaming: White Houses

The moving trucks are everywhere this time of year.  On our street we have had 3 families move.  After each move the painters and repair trucks come to get ready for the new homeowners.  With so much going on outside, I got distracted and started house dreaming.

I’m obsessed with the railings and porches.

Kitchen Island: Have a Seat

Kitchen islands allow extra space for gathering and keeping the cook in the center of the action. The height of the island and seats make all the difference for function and comfort. Getting it right is as easy as taking a few measurements.

Out and About: Holiday House Hamptons

The 2nd Annual Holiday House Hamptons presented by HC&C (Hamptons Cottages & Garden) is open at Watchcase, Sag Harbor from June 29 –  September 1, 2014. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Holiday House Hamptons visitors will have a first-look into Watchcase properties prior to the development completion.  Eighteen top interior and landscape designers transform a unique space including a two-bedroom penthouse loft, a six-bedroom townhouse, and a one-bedroom bungalow.  Exciting events will take place during the six weeks the showhouse is open to the public.

Iris Dankner, founder of Holiday House, is a 17-year breast cancer survivor who created the event to join her passion for interior design and her determination  to raise awareness and funds to help fight the disease.

Iris’ design incorporates many shades of white, textures and some whimsy, which made it fresh and comfortable. Selecting art with a positive affirmation invites good energy.  There is a beautiful kitchen also. Bravo, Iris!

Small Spaces

Happy Monday!  Sorry for the lack of posting.  I’ve been spending time with the family, catching up on task, and trying to keep things orderly around the house since we are living in the same small house through the summer.

Have you seen the House Beautiful Magazine July/August issue?  It focuses on living large in small spaces.   Peter Dunham’s Los Angeles apartment is beautifully decorated.  He moved from a 3,500 square-foot house to a 550 square-foot apartment proving that life could be wonderful when you pair down to the essentials. Which got me thinking, how much do I really need to be happy in a home.  Take a tour of his apartment here.

Monday Quote

Happy Monday! This weekend I enjoyed the view from the lovely Westside apartment my son just moved into. I’ve been busy packing boxes, purchasing first apartment essentials and juggling everything at home.   Sometimes it feels things are not getting accomplished fast enough.  Then I take a deep breath and feel thankful for another day.

Eric Cohler Curates Amerock Hardware Collection

This post is sponsored via Amerock.

Earlier this month I joined a small gathering of bloggers and interior designer Eric Cohler for a fun and interactive afternoon hosted by Amerock.  Cohler’s designs have appeared regularly on the pages of  Elle Décor, House Beautiful and many other publications.   The working lunch was at Eric Cohler’s office in NYC.   His office is gorgeous.  His attention to details from the grasscloth covered walls to the zebra print covered waste can was inspiring.

EC1

Eric Cohler has collaborated with Amerock and curated the AmerockNow collection.  With his artistic eye, he has categorized the hardware by region making it easy for the consumer to find the look they seek.  The collection’s new finishes and styles blends well with both contemporary décor and traditionally styled interiors.

EC2

Themed categories allows consumers to see specific design esthetics for regional styles making hardware selections for their project easier.  Cohler explains, hardware is like jewelry for the kitchen.  An economical way to give your kitchen a new look is to change the hardware.

 The descriptive names of the eight AmerockNOW families—#BiCoastal, #NortheastHome, #Heartland, #LondonUndone, #Lodge, #PhoenixRising, #LAExperience and #CityBeat.

What’s new in hardware design?  Featured in Masion& Objet,  Cohler predicts we will see more brushed copper in US design.  The “living finish” is warm and rustic with its patina  always changing in time as you touch it.

Cohler spoke gracefully about design.  In his book, Cohler On Design,  he shares his love for art and the influence of art in his designs.  We had a little fun and complete two DIY projects.
