Power Monday: Yellow

yellow3

If there is color that puts a smile on my face, yellow is it.  The color yellow instills energy, open communication and creative thought.  As we go about our daily routine, add a little yellow to bring optimism and enlightenment.  Daffodils are easy to find this time of year.  I love a bunch of daffodils in a Chinese vase like this arrangement by Carolyne Roehm.  Yellow is fun to wear, too.  Bring on the sunshine.polyvoreyellow

Happy Monday!

Spring Break With Espadrilles

Happy Friday! Sorry for the radio silence this week.  I was feeling under the weather. I did manage to take on some spring cleaning and  closet organizing.  I’m ready to head outside and enjoy a little sunshine, but not in boots and a coat. With spring break around the corner, these espadrilles are the perfect shoes for walking.  Not only are espadrilles comfortable to wear, espadrilles are stylish and the look of the season.

The Fundamentals: Dress For Success

I’m a fan of being comfortable at work.  Starting a new job, editing your wardrobe, or reinventing yourself, these basic fundamental pieces are sure to make a professional statement at work.

Pencil skirt,  Button down blouse, Pumps, Statement bag, Accessories. At the moment I’m loving that you can buy new or have a little fun with girl friends while thrifting for some of these beautiful pieces.  If you are near Princeton, NJ visit Greene Street Consignment located at 162 Nassau Street and update your fundaments to dress for success. You’ll find designer labels at a fraction of the original cost.

Design Musing Guest Bedroom

barclay3

The kids are all grown up and their bedrooms need a little updating.  They don’t come home as often.  However, every now and then friends and family members come to visit and I offer they stay overnight.  Does this sound familiar?  That’s exactly my situation.  In a few weeks, guest will be arriving to celebrate Easter and Passover.  Hoping to update at least one of the bedrooms before summer, I’m doing a little design musing.

Pattern mixing: I do like a balance of feminine and masculine in a guest bedroom. Barclay Butera and Ralph Lauren are two favorite brands for achieving a balance of feminine and masculine décor.

My preference is a few less pillows.  The headboard is a little too modern, maybe without the wood trim.  Call me crazy, but I have a thing about fabric tufted headboards, when I see them all I think about is dust mites.  A leather tufted headboard  would be the option for me.  (I know they are trending and every headboard I see is upholstered in fabric, it seems). Design is personal. What do you think about feminine and masculine décor in a guest bedroom?

Power Monday: Dressing for the Dream Job

Why are you going to choose failure when success is an option?  -Jillian Michaels

businesscasual

Today’s quote and tips are all about the powerful women.  Dress for your dream job.  The dress code varies depending on your industry.   When it comes to business-casual dressing,  there are two things I stay away from wearing to work, regardless of the industry, shorts and jeans. One way to transition to business-casual is to add color to your already professional wardrobe. Contrary to what is popular, business-casual does not mean coming to work in jeans and a polo shirt.  I hope my teen daughter is taking notes for the future.

Easy At Home Ocar Soiree

Two days until Oscar Sunday with host Neil Patrick Harris.  I’m getting excited to see the glamorous red carpet fashion.  I have not seen all the Academy Awards nominations for best picture, but the buzz is, it’s a tight run between Birdman and Boyhood.myoscar

With snow and low temperatures forecasted this weekend, the best place to be is home celebrating the Oscars.  What will I wear to the big event?  Something gold, something black and comfortable.

Looking for popcorn recipes for the weekend, Lonny Magazine shares Brooklyn Nitehawk Cinema’s witty (and wildly delicious) popcorn recipes inspired by this year’s Oscar nominees.  Love to hear which one you try.

Birdseed: Birdman, the movie’s title, is used as inspiration.

Even if I don’t have an invitation to  Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party  we could enjoy small bites recipes from Chef Elias and create a soiree at home.  For the recipes visit here.

Good luck to all the Academy Awards nominees.  Soiree on and stay warm.

Transition From Winter to Spring

peachy transitionthtableashleypeachyms

It’s Ash Wednesday today.  Easter and spring will soon arrive.  How do I transition from winter to spring?  I add more color.  These week I like coral.  It comes in many shades. Coral is a color I find soothing and mixes well with just about every color.  It’s not overpowering.

In small amounts, the color coral is refreshing in fashion and home decorating. A little accent color to a men’s blazer can make all the difference.  For entertaining, an aqua and coral palette is a winning combination in this lovely tablescape by Ken Gemes for the porch of the 2013 Hampton Designer Showhouse. Ashley Whittaker designs have traditional elements with a punch of colorful. I adore everything she does.  Sometimes older homes with low ceilings feel dark.  That certainly is not the case here with a coral living room that opens to a yellow room.  The back wall of  bookshelves get a welcoming update with paint.  After a long winter,  I think many of us in the northeast will be looking to add color to our homes.
