Brimfield: DIY

While organizing my boys’  room I found a few sport metals they received during their school year.  Time for a little diy project.  I decided to hang them proudly from a piece of crown molding I found while visiting Brimfield.  I painted the molding in one of their school colors and used cup hooks to hang the metals.  I have a few extra hooks for future awards–no pressure.

Thanks for stopping by.

Blogfest Recap Day 3

The excitement continued on day three at the Kravet Studio.  Design bloggers got a first hand look at how Kravet designs and manufactures their products.

We were recharged with a delicious lunch sponsored by New York Spaces at the Museum of the City of New York.  Lee Rhodes, Founder of Glassy Baby inspired us with her personal story about life, triumph, and giving back.  One small idea helps make a great impact helping individuals fighting cancer.

We had a raffle and did some fundraising to benefit DIFFA,  during lunch. We raised $2725.  Through the generosity of  Kravet’s matched contribution the total raised for DIFFA was $5450.

After lunch we attended an insightful presentation by Benjamin Moore Color Pulse 2013.

Inspired by nature, blue and green, the colors of the sky and grass, the new neutrals.
Grays: flat or high gloss.   Kelly green: getting a little darker.  Metals: flat.

Interior designer Miles Redd, noted photographer Peter Aaron, and blogger and former editor Marisa Marcantonio were interviewed by Michael Wollaeger, Editorial Director of Interiors Magazine.   We heard behind-the-scenes stories of how beautiful work is created, as well as,  how designers, photographers and bloggers work together to achieve a successful room  design.

Good photography: should have a sequence of shots that tells the story.  Good to own rights to pictures.

Long stalk flowers are not good for camera.
Photographer tired of seeing green apples for accessories.

Blogfest ended with an after party at The New Traditionalist Showroom.  They really now how to party.  The perfect ending to my experience was sharing a cab with Beth Brenner, Publisher of Traditional Home.   It’s the people that make the event special.   Kravet gets an A+ on organizing Blogfest2012.  It takes a lot of work coordinating an event.  Thank you Kravet and sponsors.  I’m looking forward to next year.

Blogfest Recap Day 2

This was my first year attending Blogfest.  I was not sure what to expect.  I arrived at Hearst Tower on 57th Street and 8th Avenue excited to be in New York City and ready for day two.  Upon my arrival on the 44th floor, all I could focus on were the beautiful flowers on the table.  You see, just the day before, I had purchased the same peonies.  I took it as a sign that I was in the right place at the right time.  Just a little over a year ago, I was working in a law firm in midtown, not far from the Hearst Tower, wishing I could follow my passion.  I couldn’t have imagined that in such a short time, I  would be in a room full of  bloggers and designers.  Moreover, I was in the Hearst Tower,  in the presence of  the editors and publishers of the magazines I read and save on my book shelves for inspiration.

I listened to the opening remarks by Kravet and Hearst   group.  I found everyone to be friendly and willing to share information about the design industry and how to get published.    The May/June issue of Veranda was in front of me, as I listened to the designers featured in this month’s issue, Timothy Whealon and Darryl Carter.   They both emphasized the importance of connecting with the client when accepting a project.

I was almost pinching myself by the time House Beautiful Editor in Chief, Newell Turner, took the stage and introduced the Next Wave Designers: Jon Call, Jill Goldberg and Michael Harold.  All three designers had different perspectives about their careers and how they got started.

Here are a few of my notes:

(1)    Edit, edit, edit.
(2)   Find your authentic voice.   Know your audience.
(3)   It’s all about the details.
(4)  Transparency on work, and  how designer operate is very important.–Darryl Carter
(5)  Just because you can gather things, doesn’t mean
you can put them together.– Darryl Carter
(6)  Important design has voice of husband, wife, as well as mine.–Timothy Whealon
(7)  Lighting is important in day and night.  Color doesn’t  need to shout at you.
It should feel light and airy.–Timothy Whealon
(8)  Important to push yourself to new experiences.–Michael Harold.
(9)  Make a goal, share it, put it out there.  Once you share a goal,
you’re accountable for it.– Jon Call
(10)  Clients have information, they think they know what to do.  Designer needs to
        educate client.

We visited the ELLE DECOR Modern Life Concept House, hosted by Editor in Chief Michael Boodro.   It was a pleasure meeting Katie Leede and listening to her share details about the art and fabric used in her design.

After a delicious lunch, we were greeted by Editor in Chief of Traditional Home, Ann Maine, at the Kravet Showroom.  She interviewed Alexa Hampton, a great designer with a big, warm personality.  We laughed and Alexa did a little singing too.

Beth Greene, Jennifer Powell and the whole Kravet team are awesome.

We had a little contest at the D&D Building with our favorite item in the Brunschwig & Fils showroom.

Cocktail reception and preview of Baccarat showroom with guest speaker Vincente Wolf.

The day ended with a party at the GE Monogram Design Center in mid-town. It was hard to leave the beautiful kitchen and the generous Kravet team.

 Thank you for stopping by.

Blogfest Recap Day 1

Wow,  it has been a fun and busy week and a half.  I attended Trade Secrets, a fundraiser for Women’s Support Services (WSS), which started 12 years ago in Bunny Williams’ backyard.   Then I was off to Blogfest in New York City for three days.    After returning from Blogfest, I helped my son prepare for his prom Thursday and attended his graduation Sunday.  Needless to say,  I haven’t been thrifting for my usual post, but have some great photos of the events to share with you for the next few days.

Blogfest 2012, is the second annual New York City design event hosted by Kravet Inc.  This amazing event brings together editors from top design and lifestyle magazines, top brands and  industry designers and celebrities.  The kickoff was at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House and was  hosted by Margaret Russell, Editor in Chief of Architectural Digest. The design show house benefits the Kips Boys and Girls Club which provides children services, giving children a safe place to play and grow after school.

In its 40th year,  the Kips Bay show house this year occupies two adjacent duplex residences at The Aldyn – a modern, luxury high rise overlooking the Hudson River.  There are 31 decorators participating in this year’s show house.  They used their talents to transform an empty white space into beautiful and fanciful living spaces.   The two spectacular residences on view are  listed for $15.9M and $16.9M and boast six bedrooms, panoramic views of the city, private swimming pools and terrace.

We mingled with Architectural Digest staff and designers, connected with bloggers and made new friends.

Next, we were transported by bus to the Savant Experience Center in Soho.  A cocktail party hosted by Thom Filicia awaited us in the 8,000 square foot center designed by him.   Apple based control and automation technology in the 8,000 square foot center was incorporated into  Thom’s gorgeous designed rooms.  The idea is genius.  Savant  provides the ability to shop and experiencing technology in a beautiful home setting.

This inviting high tech bathroom had a t.v. mounted on the beautiful wood doors.

The night was still young so we headed to the after party at the  Savior Beds showroom.  The walk to the showroom brought happy thoughts growing up within a few blocks of Soho.

I met some new blogging friends and we stopped by for a cupcake and coffee at Georgetown Cupcakes, a great end to an already delightful day.  Special thanks to Kravet for all their hard work.

  Thanks for stopping by.

My A-HA Moment

One of the highlights of Blogfest was meeting Newell Turner,  Editor-in-Chief of House Beautiful.  He is a charming man.  He gave us a little challenge.  He invited bloggers to share an “a-ha moment. ”

My “aha moment” inspired by House Beautiful is our little home.  I believe every house could be beautiful.  A job relocation gave me two days to find a house for the family.  I remember  bringing  the kids to the new house and thinking, “did I make a big mistake.”  At approximately 1400 sq.ft., this house is less than half the size of our previous home.    What matters to me is that our family is together.  I wanted to make new memories in the house.  For the first few months, I did not decorate.  We lived in the house without one picture on the wall.   I then challenged my self to turn this old house into a quaint home for all to enjoy.  With a small budget, some diy projects, and flea market finds, I turned a cold empty space to an inviting place for the family.

Living in the present and appreciating  family and the people around me is very important.  Meeting the Kravet family reinforced the significance of family and commitment to your craft.  I saw a sign this weekend that speaks volumes: Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.

Thank you for stopping by.

Guest Post: Architecture In the Garden

Hello everyone!  My name is Becky Harris and I’m a contributor at Houzz, a home design site focused on helping design professionals and homeowners manage the remodeling and decorating process.  Thanks so much to Ivy for having me!

Because everything is in bloom right now I thought I’d share a few beautiful traditional gardens with you.  These three gardens have incorporated striking architectural elements that contribute to their beauty.  Large architectural elements help to give a garden boundaries, create delightful surprises along the way, and tie the home and garden together.  Here is a look at three of my favorites from Houzz.

A charming garden folly like this one can be used as a potting shed, a playhouse or a secret hideaway. A number of sources sell garden houses like this one, pre-fabricated and custom built.

A classic pergola creates a transitional space between the house and the garden. Classic columns add to its presence. Also, you can train climbing plants like wisteria to add to a pergola’s shade.

Finally, this stone wall creates a unique garden boundary that looks like it was pulled from the Tuscan countryside and placed in this garden. If you aren’t lucky enough to have actual archeological remains on your property, have your stone mason construct something similar to this and add shutters to get the same look.

Thank you Becky for visting us today.

Curated: Beach Essentials

I’m ready for a little fun in the sun.  Going to the beach is much more pleasant when you have the right essentials.  Protection from the sun is important.  In addition to sunblock,  I always wear  a hat and sunglasses for eye protection.  Chic and comfortable the navy soleil sling chair is a great find.  A  monogram beach towel will keep others from claiming  your towel.  I love the awning stripes on this towel.  No trip to the beach would be complete without bringing my favorite magazines and a great seagrass tote to carry them.

Next week I will be attending Blogfest2012 in New York City.  I will not be blogging for a few days. You could follow me on Twitter @idhomedecor for event coverage.

Thrifting Window Shutters

On my recent thrifting trip to Brimfield, MA,  I came across a stack of shutters.   Besides using shutters on the outside of a house there are many creative ideas for recycling shutters.  The best part, you save money and our landfills.

I love the look of the shutters in this cozy living space from Country Living.

Up-cycle shutters into a console table.  This is a charming table.  I would  add a  glass top.  It makes it easier to clean and creates an even surface for a lamp and  accessories.

shutter plant stand is another great idea.  I like the look of this stand.  A bust or sculpture would make a beautiful display.

Wooden shutters can be just as functional and good looking indoors or out.   Hang shutters to add architectural interest and height to a room, as designer Kim Woods illustrates in this dining room.

Dining Room traditional dining room

Shutter headboards are simple to install.  They look great in this layered headboard installation.
