Staircase DIY

Personalizing a house rental presents a few challenges.   Among them is whether or not to make the investment in quality items that you cannot move with you.  Case in point, how to bring personality to this small staircase.

Paint would be an easy fix.  A rug would be ideal.  These two rugs from Home Decorators and Dash and Albert caught my attention.

Because the home is a rental, I was up for a little budget friendly project.  I couldn’t pass on the challenge to personalize the staircase.   A trip to Marshalls for some floor mats, Joann Fabric for decorative nailheads trim, Ikea for picture frames.

Stair Tread Installation Kit

I used nonslip pads on each step and heavy duty tape to secure them, a heavy duty staple gun to attach area rug under the overhang and the back of each step.  I then reinforced the rug to the top of  each step with nailstrips, it also hides the staples.  I used 4 small floor mats ($12.99/each).  I made sure the pattern matched and the ends finished towards the back of the step.

For the art work I used Ikea picture frames and bought two postcards from local aritists.  The art for the large picture frame is from a book purchased at the library.  A mirror purchased at a thrift store ($2) and a small oil painting from Jane’s Consignment ($15). This project was under $100.
