Entertaining: Make It Beautiful

I’m getting excited that the holidays are almost here.  Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year.  However, I don’t wait for Thanksgiving to come around to enjoy everyday entertaining.  Sharing a meal with family and  friends or eating alone is an opportunity to set the table.   It doesn’t need to be fancy. Just make it yours.

I had the pleasure of entertaining in the garden.  See the story featured on the HomeGoods Blog

However, special celebrations deserve a little something more.   I have a great source to get you started.  I had the opportunity to meet Michael Devine on Wednesday for Fall Market at the D&D Building.  Michael is a noted tastemaker and designs beautiful hand printed fabrics.  Michael was there for a book signing and a lively conversation about entertaining and his launch of his new dinnerware collection.  I picked up a copy  of his  beautifully photographed book.  Michael shares his joy for gardening and entertaining in his garden.  The sections of the book are divided by seasonal entertaining with delicious recipes.  I recommend buy the book and try Michael’s pumpkin cake roll that he grew up enjoying.  It’s the perfect book to stay inspired throughout the year.

Project Design 2014: Healing The Body and Soul

Bedroom: Charles Pavarini III and J. Randall Tarasuk  Charles Pavarini III Design Associates, Inc.

The power of color for healing and technology is carefully and thoughtfully incorporated into this bedroom design.   Shades of blue can be very calming.  At a touch of a button the lights are programmed to deliver a calming blue bathroom where you relax in the tub and enhance the  feeling of calm and well being.  Lavender filled plush toys that warm up to give aromatherapy, children’s books selected with color in mind, and rocks/crystals that deliver a calming energy are just a few of the carefully design elements you’ll find.

As designers, we have the duty to help others heal through their environment.

The mission of The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is to give comfort and shelter to families experiencing the pain of having a sick child in local hospital facilities. A “home away from home”, the House provides the parents and siblings of these children with a temporary haven in a secure and comfortable environment among other families sharing a similar burden.

We loved designers  Young Huh, Danielle Colding and Drew McGukin individual designs last year.  They returned for Project Design, Phase II and joined forces to create a joyous space full of  color, whimsy and lots of fun.  The space is zoned for play and conversation, inspired by Hunt Slonem, painter and sculptor.

Purple In October

HBt

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I’ll be covering the Holiday House NYC next month and celebrating all things pink this month.   In the meantime, I wanted to bring attention to another great cause. Did you know that October is also Domestic Violence Awareness month?   Domestic violence hurts everyone. Approximately 8 million men and women experience violence at the hands of an intimate partner every year. When there are children in a household, those children are likely to suffer abuse as well.

purple

To raise awareness, let’s get the word out.  Add a shade of purple to pink in support of two important causes.

Hello October: Study Inspiration

Happy October! This is a busy month starting with fall Market at the D&D, High Point Market, and great showhouses, like the Phase II of the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island . See last year’s designs here. The holidays will soon be here, too. I’m hoping I can get some work done in the study, now that the books are on the shelves. Having champagne taste, I look to find inspiration. After, it’s back to reality and getting the room finished on less than a champagne budget.

Monday Quote: An Affair With A House

bh3

“I’ve come to learn that age is beautiful.  That’s why we like old furniture and old houses.  Some people want to ignore the past.  They think only the future is important.  But I think we get to the future by going through the past.”

Bunny Williams – An Affair With A House

Finding my style: I love wearing dresses. When winter arrives, pretty pastels coats and floral patterns will  brighten gray days.  – Designer Ulyana Sergeenko, before A Show, Paris, September 2013. – Neutral colors, cable sweater and metallic gold skirt make a fall chic look. – Linda Rodin reminds us to be true to yourself.  “She breaks all boundaries of conventional style conduct, marching to the beat of her own drum, and we couldn’t be more inspired.” –Rue Magazine

The weekend is here enjoy the fabulous weather in good style.

Teen Bedroom Inspiration

Happy Wednesday!  Early this morning I opened a few more boxes from our move.    We’ve made progress.   Today, I gathering inspiration for a teen girl’s bedroom. The  architecture of the house and its country side location will have some influence on the project.
