Heat and Glo Fireplaces

image005

With the cold weather and shorter day light hours many of us rather stay in than venture out.  Fireplaces have long been a popular choice for homes because the beauty of the hearth and the heat provides an inviting area for families to gather. New colors and finishes have helped keep traditional fireplace styles looking fresh. Heat & Glo offers a complete line of gas fireplaces, gas fireplace inserts, wood and electric fireplaces, and stoves of the highest quality and with the greatest attention to detail and design.

Browse Heat and Glo products.   Add a little luxury with a fireplace in unique spaces such as kitchens, bedrooms, outdoors and in master baths.  There are many opportunities to personalizing your fireplace with unique fronts, media, and lighting.  My choice is wood burning only because my husband does all the work and he enjoys the process of cutting wood.  Down the line, however, I would love to press a button and have an instant fireplace that looks and sounds as good as a wood burning fireplace.  With so many price points, I’m sure there is one for you.   Come in out of the cold to a warm fireplace this winter.

Design Takes Time

holllyhockfringe

The holidays have arrived. We are excited to be hosting Thanksgiving in the country this year.  Although I wish I could have the house beautifully decorated, great design takes time.  Most custom furnishings take 6 to 8 weeks and sometimes longer to complete. In the meantime, I’m swooning over a few furniture pieces, fabrics and accessories.  Some are contemporary, other items are traditional, but I like the mix.  If you are updating your home for the holidays, be patient.  Don’t go out and get something off the store floor in a hurry without putting together a design concept on how all your furnishings will work together. Design takes time to do it right.  Take it from me, it’s double the trouble and expense when I hear some client stories.  Collect your ideas, wishes, and dream rooms for now.  Then contact a designer you trust.

Style: Sweaters That Work And Play

The temperature is a little colder these days.  Time to shop for sweaters.  I’m loving these three looks for work and play.  Basic, but not boring.  Beige and gray  make a statement paired with leopard and leather.   Oh, those shoes, gorgeous!  Sometimes you just have to go for it and get out of your comfort zone.  Enjoy the weekend.

Contemporary Kitchen & Dining

ronald-mcdonald-house 1-internet

This stunning kitchen & dining area transformation at the 2014 Project Design Ronald McDonald Show House was created by designers Vasi Ypsilantis  and Margreet Cevasco.  This is the second year the design duo poured their heart and soul into the Kitchen & Dining area renovations at the Ronald McDonald House Long Island.  Project Design is an effort led by Kravet Fabrics along with the interior design industry to provide a calm and restful healing environment for families experiencing the pain of having a child in area hospitals.

The kitchen layout functions to support both cooking, storage and eating at any hour of the day or night and multiple integrated appliances complete the design. Additional shelves were built-in to the expanded pantry so each family can store grocery items.

The adjacent dining area with cozy banquette seating offers a soothing home-like setting that helps guests unwind and offers a moment of relaxation. “If we can allow families caring for their children in the neighboring hospital some comforts of home and a living space that supports them, then we have achieved our goal,” said Margreet Cevasco.

Want to get the look:  1. Add a large piece of art to your dining room walls.  2.  I like the use of the banquet and several small tables and chairs, instead of the traditional long table, which can be difficult to move.  3. Consider chairs in white faux leather to brighten up the space.   They are easy to clean.  4.  Vary your lighting.  Task lighting and whimsical, contemporary light fixtures keep the space fun.

5. Don’t skimp on the appliances.  Buy the best you can afford.  6. For a transitional backsplash consider white mosaic glass tiles in a vertical pattern, instead of the traditional white subway tiles.

7. The ceiling is the fifth wall.  Paint and wallpaper are just two of the many choices to  personalize your kitchen ceiling.  8. Add a pop of color.  I love the clean lines of the cerulean sliding pantry doors alongside classic white European frameless cabinetry.

Please consider the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island during this time of  holiday giving by volunteering, donating, or supporting their wish list and dinner program.

Thanks of stopping by.

Cast A Spell This Halloween

Have a bewitching hour!

Happy Halloween!   What to wear:  The Milla jacket is a nice alternative instead of a sweater.   I like the buttons detail.  Although I usually wear little eye make up, this night calls for a little something extra, such as  the smoky eye make up.  My name is on the table styled beautifully by a 100 Layer Cake blog.  Are you in the Halloween spirit?

We had our first frost last night.  It will be a quiet night at home.  On a cool night,  I’m looking forward to candle light, a warm fire and a cocktail to kick-off the weekend.  Try one of 21 Halloween cocktails found on the Huffington Post.  Holiday House NYC 2014 will open in November to benefit the Breast Cancer Foundation. Come back and see more gorgeous designs. How will you celebrate the night? Have a safe and fun Halloween!

11 Tips to Stay Young

C1

Hello, again.  Last week I had a special visitor at home.  My mom came to visit.  She usually comes up for the day or overnight, so when she agreed to stay the week, I was thrilled.  Her visit was a little extra special this time because we celebrated her 75th birthday.  I feel blessed and lucky to have had a little one-on-one time with her.

My mom has the energy of a 20 year old.  Frankly, I don’t know how she does it.  I asked her to share some tips to staying young and vibrant.

1.  Take care of yourself in order to be of service to others, including family.

2.  Keep moving.   Stay active.  If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.

3.  Eat well.  Avoid process food.  Learn to cook nutritious meals.

4.  Stay connected with friends, get outside, meet friends.

5.  Don’t let others define you.  Age is just a number.

6.  Find your inner peace.  Pray, meditate, walk in nature.

7.  Stay informed on current events.

8.  Drink lots of water.

9.  Moisturize.

10.  Stay positive.  Life is a journey.  You cannot control everything.

11.  Laugh often.
